QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Substitute teachers must possess the appropriate certification to be employed as a substitute teacher as stated in 16 KAR 2:030 Substitute teachers and emergency school personnel and 16 KAR 2:120 Emergency certification and out-of-field teaching. 

GOALS:

 

        To continue the student learning in a classroom in absence of the classroom teacher.

 

        Will be an ambassador for Spencer County Public Schools and commit to offering excellent customer service to students, parents, and staff.

 

CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE REQUIRED:

 

      KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Basic subjects taught in the District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading.
  • Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Leadership ability including interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

      ABILITY TO:

  • Learn child guidance principles and practices.
  • Communicate and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff and the public including members of ethnic communities.
  • Perform routine clerical duties in support of classroom activities.
  • Print and write legibly.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Learn procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Learn to apply and explain policies and procedures related to school and program activities.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Monitor, observe and report students behavior according to approved policies and procedures.
  • Operate instructional and office equipment.

 

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Have teaching as the first priority.  Student learning is not to be disrupted because the regular classroom teacher is out of the classroom. 
  • Classroom management is a clear expectation.
  • Follow lessons established by the classroom teacher. 
  • Monitor and report behavior of students according to approved procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior; check and assist students with lab work as necessary.
  • Treat each other with respect – student to student, student to teacher, teacher to student and teacher to teacher.
  • Be punctual.  Must arrive 15-20 minutes before school starts and leave no earlier than the end of the day schedule, unless you are ½ day substitute teacher.
  • Familiarize yourself with the location of important materials, and check on any special duties.
  • Dress appropriately.  Follow each school’s dress code for faculty and staff.
  • Follow each school’s discipline plan.
  • Assist in overseeing students while in labs; provide for supplies inventory as necessary.
  • Assist students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and general guidance.
  • Confer, as needed, with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
  • Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and regulations.

 FOR THIS TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT, STATE LAW REQUIRES A NATIONAL AND STATE CRIMINAL HISTORY BACKGROUND CHECK AND HAVE A LETTER, PROVIDED BY THE INDIVIDUAL, FROM THE CABINET FOR HEALTH AND FAMILY SERVICES STATING THE EMPLOYEE IS CLEAR TO HIRE BASED ON NO FINDINGS OF SUBSTANTIATED CHILD ABUSE OR NEGLECT FOUND THROUGH A BACKGROUND CHECK OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT RECORDS MAINTAINED BY THE CABINET FOR HEALTH AND FAMILY SERVICES AS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
